Carpet Guide

Carpet Guide

Please find below a guide to some of the options/terminology used when choosing carpet, for a more in depth insight we recommend this link www.carpetinfo.co.uk

Styles:
There are three basic carpet constructions: cut pile (twists & velvets), woven (Axminster predominately patterned woven twist & velvet) and loop pile (Berber types)

Texture:
Carpet texture establishes the character of a room or home, from the formal look of velvet or the popular twist to the resurgent look of loop pile. The texture of carpet allows you to express your personality and lifestyle.

Density:
Density is how tightly each fibre is stitched together. To avoid a crushed and matted appearance, choose a carpet with high density which is likely to also have a higher pile weight.

Pile Weight:
Pile weight of the carpet pile measured in ounces per square yard or grams per square metre. The heavier the weight generally the denser the carpet. Heavier and denser carpets tend to last longer than their lighter / less dense counterparts.

Fibre Types:

Wool: A natural luxurious fibre, which is easily maintained, resists soiling, repels surface spills and responds well to cleaning. It is ecologically advantageous, completely recyclable/biodegradable and has good insulation properties, which reduce noise, heat loss, and condensation.

Nylon: Durable and resilient, more likely found in the more expensive carpets as is generally less liable to flattening than the other man made alternatives.

Polypropylene: Used in many carpets, this fibre has excellent stain and fade resistance.

Polyester: Inherently stain and fade resistant, it maintains good colour clarity as well.

Suitability/Performance:
Performance refers to how well the carpet is able to maintain its original look and feel as time passes. Carpets are rated as Domestic, Heavy Domestic, Extra Heavy Domestic.
